How much does a custom app cost in Brisbane?

James Pepplinkhouse / / 3 min read

It depends...

Mostly on what the app needs to do. So instead of throwing a number at you, I'll walk you through how we work it out: how a quote comes together, how you pay, what it costs to run, and how to tell if it's worth doing at all.

How a fixed quote is worked out

Every quote starts with a conversation about the job the app takes off your team. From there, the price comes down to a few things:

  • What it has to do. The screens, the steps and the rules your business follows.
  • Who uses it. Just your staff, or your customers as well, and what each person is allowed to see.
  • What it connects to. Your accounts package, job system, online store or anything else. If a system has an API (a standard way for software to talk to other software), we check what is possible for your setup before we quote.
  • What information it holds. Customer, payment or health information needs more care, and that is part of the price.

We write all of that down in plain English, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. If something is unclear, we ask before we quote rather than guess.

Stages, not one big number

We break a build into stages. Each stage is working software you can see and use, and each has its own fixed quote, agreed before it starts. You only ever commit to the next stage, and you can pause or stop between any two.

A first working version is usually in front of you in about 2 weeks. That is when you find out whether the app does what you pictured, long before most of the budget is spent.

How you pay

  • Small jobs (stages under about $10,000 + GST) are paid up front, when you accept the quote.
  • Bigger jobs are paid half at the start and half on completion (sign-off).

Sign-off means you have tested it and it works as agreed. If the scope changes, we agree the change and its price before starting on it.

What it costs to run

There are no monthly maintenance fees. You get 30 days of free bug fixes after launch. After that you only pay when you ask us for something: support is $250 + GST an hour, and anything bigger gets its own fixed quote. Your app runs in your own Amazon Web Services (AWS) account, which we set up, so you pay hosting straight to the provider, not to us.

You own the app, the code and the data. If you ever want someone else to look after it, you can take it with you.

Does it pay for itself?

This is the question that matters more than the price. Every proposal we send includes a payback calculation for your business, so you see the numbers before you commit.

Here is the worked example from our website. Say an app saves three team members 4 hours a week each, and their time costs the business $75 an hour. That is 12 hours a week, about $3,900 a month. A $15,000 + GST build pays for itself in about four months, and keeps saving after that.

Your numbers will be different, and that is the point of working them out together. If software isn't the answer for your business, we will tell you.

Where to go from here

If you have built a prototype already, read We built our app in Lovable. What now?. If the job is connecting systems you already use, see our pages on Xero and MYOB integration, ServiceM8 integration and Cin7 to WooCommerce integration.

See exactly how a project works, step by step, or tell us about the problem and we will come back with a written proposal and a fixed quote.
